“It is magic until you understand it and mathematics thereafter”.

These are the words spoken by none other than Swami Bharti Krishna Tirtha ji himself on Vedic Mathematics.

Vedic Mathematics is ancient system of mathematics which was formulated and encapsulated in modern form by Respected Swami Bharthi Krishna Tirtha ji. He was the 143rd Shankaracharya of Goverdhan Peeth, Puri. Bharati Krishna Tirthaji got his understanding of Mathematics from a particular portion of the Atharvaveda called also called Sulba (Sulva) Sutras, “the easy mathematical formulae“, that’s the meaning of the expression. The concept of Vedic Mathematics is further divided into 16 sutras which are further divided into upsutras. However, Mathematics did exist in the Indian culture since ages. The main contributors during the Vedic period were Baudhayana, Apastambha, and Katyayana. Later on, Aryabhata redefined Mathematics and is often known as the one of the first major mathematician that India produced.

So, Vedic Mathematics or Vedic Math is the study of ancient Indian Mathematics moulded and shaped into a contemporary form by Swami Bharathi Krishna Tirtha ji. It is considered ‘magical’ by many because of its supreme authority on the subject of Mathematics.
