The mathematical topper, in his school, in his university, at university of Cambridge! The first Indian to receive the great honour of being ‘Senior Wrangler’! This suits none other than Raghunath Purushottam Paranjape. We know him as, R. P. Paranjape!
WHAT DOES IT MEAN BY HAVING AN HONOUR OF BEING ‘SENIOR WRANGLER’?
Cambridge university used to honour a student by the title ‘Wrangler’ whosoever gets first class in the third year of undergraduation and the highest scoring student was honoured as ‘Senior Wrangler’. R. P. Paranjape topped these exams and became a Senior Wrangler in the year 1899. As a senior wrangler Paranjape got many facilities for his further education. He got a help in his fellowship. With a good position in the university, he also got an invitation to write a book.
INTERESTING THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT R P PARANJAPE:
Birth date: 16th February, 1876
Birth place: Murdi, Ratnagiri.
Maharshri Karve (a social reformer) was his cousin and always helped him in education.
After completing his higher education near his home-town, he received a scholarship from the Indian government for excellent academic performance in B.Sc. Then he went to England.
In 1899, he was honoured by the British government as the first Indian Wrangler.
1902 : The post of a Principal at Fergusson College was offered to him.
1913 : Appointed as the member of Mumbai’s Legal Association.
1914 : Won the Municipal elections.
1916 : Got membership to represent Mumbai University in the Assembly.
1921 : The government appointed him as the education minister till 1923.
1927 : Served as the member of the Indian Representative Association in England.
1932 : Became the Vice chancellor of Lucknow University.
1949 : Founded the Indian Intellectualist Organization in Chennai and also became its President.
He used to consider Gopal Krushna Gokhale as his ‘Guru’.
He became famous as Rationalist and a Social reformer.
His cursive handwriting was very impressive and beautiful.
He opened a school named as ‘Gopal Krushna Gokhale School’ . The name of the library at school owned the name of his father ‘Purushottam’.
